The financial aid process begins NOW.  You must complete and summit your FAFSA beginning in October. Parents with college bound students must use the 2016 taxes in filling out the FAFSA.  The financial aid game is based on first come first serve, income, assets, family size and what school you plan to attend.   The sooner you get it in, the greater your chances in getting the money.  That’s what it is all about.  The MONEY.  So lets go get it.

In the financial aid game,  YOU have to push and never stop until.  That until means RESULTS!  Getting MONEY you don’t have to pay back requires endless effort.  There are so many obstacles that will try to hinder you from reaching financial success.  For example, lack of information from a guidance counselor, admission counselor from a college, financial aid administer from a college, or a close  a friend. YOU can not stop until you get the results you are seeking. RESULTS are FACTS and FIGURES.  The fact is, once you FIGURE IT OUT (whatever it takes) OUT COMES THE FIGURES (Money).  Be RELENTLESS.

One of the best kept secrets to the financial aid game is obtaining specialize information. The trick is getting the information.  One of things that separated me from other students in obtaining a wealth of free funds for college is first obtaining a wealth of information.  That wealth of information comes from READING.  Read before you take action.  Most people don’t read today even if it comes with a manual of instruction.  People experiment the process instead of knowing the process.  One of the ways to know is to READ.  Read books, articles and  college catalogs on financial aid to get specialized information for your unique situation.  That’s the TRICK.  READING.

Parents  making 6 figure incomes will not qualify for need-based aid (federal and state grants) when they complete the FAFSA.  However, there are options when it comes to getting institutional aid from 400 colleges.  What prevent parents making 6 figure incomes from getting free aid is not selecting  schools that require completing the CSS Profile application.  The CSS Profile is a more extensive application that looks at a more detail break down of your income situation.  For example, they evaluate a family’s medical bills, school costs for younger children and the calculations of certain assets.  You will get free institutional money if your college-bound student is accepted at one of these schools.  The key is looking at more expensive private schools that accepts the CSS Profile with huge endowments.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the State legislative leaders made a deal that created free tuition at the City University Of New York and the State University Of New York-for both community colleges and four-year colleges and universities-for families with annual incomes up to $125,000.  Middle-class families with college-bound students can now attend college without going broke.

This deal gives 94,000 families in New York State an opportunity for free public college tuition.  However, there is a catch.  Those that receive free tuition and graduates from college must live and work in New York State for the same amount of years it took to get the degree.  For example, if it takes you 4 years to get a degree, you must work and live in New York State for 4 years.  If you decide to live and work outside of New York State after graduating, you must pay back the tuition cost in loans.

For over twenty years I have worked with parents from all backgrounds dealing with the financial aid process.  The most troubling parent I have experienced is the first-generation parent with the college-bound student.  They are not knowledgeable about the financial aid game and they don’t know who trust to give them the proper guidance.  They are not comfortable in investing in information or professionals to help them succeed financially.  They are very tentative.  You can’t blame them.  Unfortunately, they try to do it on their own which cost them a lot of money at the end (a bunch of loans).  Here is my advice for first-generation parents with college-bound students seeking free resources to pay for college.  SEEK HELP FIRST!  But make sure you are getting the right information to use based on your unique circumstances.  Hire a professional.  Make sure you do your homework and check their background before committing to their service.  Get the help.  It’s a must.
