Parents  making 6 figure incomes will not qualify for need-based aid (federal and state grants) when they complete the FAFSA.  However, there are options when it comes to getting institutional aid from 400 colleges.  What prevent parents making 6 figure incomes from getting free aid is not selecting  schools that require completing the CSS Profile application.  The CSS Profile is a more extensive application that looks at a more detail break down of your income situation.  For example, they evaluate a family’s medical bills, school costs for younger children and the calculations of certain assets.  You will get free institutional money if your college-bound student is accepted at one of these schools.  The key is looking at more expensive private schools that accepts the CSS Profile with huge endowments.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the State legislative leaders made a deal that created free tuition at the City University Of New York and the State University Of New York-for both community colleges and four-year colleges and universities-for families with annual incomes up to $125,000.  Middle-class families with college-bound students can now attend college without going broke.

This deal gives 94,000 families in New York State an opportunity for free public college tuition.  However, there is a catch.  Those that receive free tuition and graduates from college must live and work in New York State for the same amount of years it took to get the degree.  For example, if it takes you 4 years to get a degree, you must work and live in New York State for 4 years.  If you decide to live and work outside of New York State after graduating, you must pay back the tuition cost in loans.

For over twenty years I have worked with parents from all backgrounds dealing with the financial aid process.  The most troubling parent I have experienced is the first-generation parent with the college-bound student.  They are not knowledgeable about the financial aid game and they don’t know who trust to give them the proper guidance.  They are not comfortable in investing in information or professionals to help them succeed financially.  They are very tentative.  You can’t blame them.  Unfortunately, they try to do it on their own which cost them a lot of money at the end (a bunch of loans).  Here is my advice for first-generation parents with college-bound students seeking free resources to pay for college.  SEEK HELP FIRST!  But make sure you are getting the right information to use based on your unique circumstances.  Hire a professional.  Make sure you do your homework and check their background before committing to their service.  Get the help.  It’s a must.

Employer-paid tuition opportunities are available when you work for an organization.  In other words, any job you get, you should look to see if your employer would assist in covering college costs. The most popular programs are scholarships, tuition reimbursement, co-op and internshipsScholarships usually go to employees or children of employees.  Tuition reimbursement is when the company you work for allows you to take college courses and gives back the tuition cost upon you completing the course. The Cooperative education is a program that combines your college major’s requirements with off-campus job experience.  Internships are another method of getting monies from an employer. This is when the employer pays you while you gain experience in your major.  You must check with your employer  human resources department for these money opportunities.

If you are willing to sacrifice a few years of your life, or one weekend out of every month as a reservist, you definitely can cash in from the armed forces to pay college costs.  The military is not for everyone.  However, the benefits they offer is beyond paying for college.  I am still benefiting after graduating from college.  There are so many ways to skin this cat. From joining full-time, part-time as a reservist, attend their universities and joining a ROTC program while you are in college.  If you take out student loans, the military will pay for them after graduation.  AWESOME!  This way of getting funding for college is a great way to supplement your college cash flow.  Get all your detail information from your nearest recruiter.
